Sam Millar – Holy Sass Album Review

Most people will know Sam from British Hard Rock band Bigfoot, however Sam has really shown his musical talent and musical versatility with his new album Holy Sass! Overall the album has a great feel good vibe, it blends both rock and pop elements along with great lyrics and of course, brilliant guitar solos.

Opening track “Eyes” gives us a beat that will without a doubt have people clapping along to at shows! Throughout the entire album Sam is showing us that not only can he play guitar, but he is also a great vocalist, although the vocals on the album could do with being a touch louder in the mix for some tracks.

The second track on the album has a nice nostalgic feel, almost giving us a Christmassy vibe. The song is brought to life with the beautiful harmonies throughout, adding more depth to the track as a whole. On this song Sam delivers a soaring guitar solo, which in my opinion could have been a bit louder in the mix at the start, however this does not take away from the solo being a stand out solo on the EP! “Cyber Girl” highlights that in today’s society most young people will talk online but not actually meet up in real life, bringing to light the longing for a real connection that goes beyond messages online. The ending to this song fits perfectly with the topic of the song and really adds flavour to the whole album.

The drums on the third track are panned nicely; this is followed by a catchy guitar riff which is sprinkled with whistling which sets a lovely tone for the song. In this song Sam whips out the acoustic, which is a welcome change to the rest of the album as it gives a stripped down feel.

“Lost in Translation” features beautiful guitar leads between the vocals. The song also has a nice melody and includes a heartfelt chorus; this is all topped off with a hard hitting solo which takes the song to the next level. The violins at the end of the track bring the song together and are a nice touch, adding more feel.

Track 5 is without a doubt a stand out track on the album, fast paced and hard hitting, this is a feel Bigfoot fans have came accustomed to. Backing vocals add to the depth of this song. The guitars could have sat a bit louder in the mix, having said that, the guitar parts are well thought out and this all builds towards the breakdown/ build up just before the solo.

Over all this is a great album from Sam Millar, it really shows his versatility and shows off his ability as a vocalist, song writer, composer and guitarist. It is clear that Sam is not short of musical ideas and we look forward to more music and live shows from him!
